Deer… They form the familys Servidasous male deer is called stag or buck, a female deer is called doe, and a young deer is called fawn. There are about 60 species of deer.

Deer do not make nests or dens. They find a safe and comfortable place to rest under low-hanging evergreen branches. They stay close to where they can find food. In summer, they eat grasses, plants and weeds. In the fall, they like mushrooms and small branches. They do not store their food for the winter. The doe usually has one or two fawns in the spring. The fawn is precocial, and can stand immediately after birth, but is weak. The doe will hide each fawn in a different place. They are camouflaged by spots on their backs. Deer have many predators. Wolves, cougar, dogs and people will eat deer. They are always looking, listening and smelling for danger.

The Resilient Beauty of Deer

Deer, graceful members of the Cervidae family, show incredible adaptations for survival in nature. Unlike many other animals, they do not create nests or burrows, preferring to rest in safe, inconspicuous locations under low-hanging evergreen branches, where they are protected from predators and the elements. They stay close to food sources, and their diet varies according to the season—grazing on luxuriant grasses, plants, and weeds in the summer and mushrooms, small branches, and shrubs in the autumn. Unlike animals that hoard food for the winter, deer must browse all year, making them acutely aware of their surroundings. In the spring, the doe normally gives birth to one or two precocial fawns, who can stand immediately after birth but remain vulnerable. To safeguard them, the doe hides each fawn separately, using their dappled patches to blend into the forest floor and avoid notice. Despite these protections, deer encounter a variety of predators, including wolves, cougars, domestic dogs, and humans, necessitating the use of their excellent senses of smell, sight, and hearing to detect danger. Deer reflect the natural world’s resilience and beauty, as they are always vigilant and resourceful.
