Beyond jackals, cheetahs, and hippos, we look for the Big Five: majestic lions, elusive leopards, majestic elephants, majestic rhinos, and frightening Cape buffalo.These charismatic megafauna, beloved icons of Africa’s rich heritage, have enraptured hearts across the globe. However, they have also become the focal point of heightened concern among dedicated wildlife conservationists. Sadly, the IUCN’s 2021 categorization places the African savanna elephant at risk, while the African lion and leopard are vulnerable. The IUCN lists the southern white rhinoceros and African buffalo as near threatened, while it classifies the black rhinoceros as critically endangered.
